Design Process The custom design process requires at least two meetings, with the initial visit being at the home or site. This is where the brainstorming happens and conceptual ideas are expressed. I also document the site using digital camera or video for later reference.

Functional needs and aesthetics are discussed to represent the client’s personal tastes and desires. We discuss the client’s budget and limits to make sure the client is comfortable with investing in custom furniture. If the client chooses to move ahead, a design fee is due at this time. The amount depends upon the scope of the piece. The range is from $150 to $500 for most projects.

Table with ModelThe next time we meet I will present working drawings, with a scale drawing showing three views. Sometimes the nature of the piece requires a three dimensional drawing or scale model.

Models are excellent tools to aide in visualizing and bring confidence to the project to ensure client expectations are achieved. When a chair is commissioned, it usually requires a full size prototype.

The prototype ensures the chair will sit well. After all points of drawing are understood and the client is comfortable with the results, a price is determined, broken down by labor and materials. I require a down payment of half the total. The project is booked with a starting date and an expected completion time. The balance due is paid at delivery time.

One of the inherent qualities of custom furniture is the open time frame, allowing for flexibility and refinement of design. This leads to furniture with structural integrity, uncompromising unique design, and personalized service.
